Modes
Therearethreemodesavailableforusersconnectingtotransmittersandreceivers.ThemodesarePrivateonly,
SharedonlyandPrivateorShared.Thetransmittersettingistheauthorityifthereisconflictintheuseror
receiversetting.Forexample,ifthetransmitterissettoprivateonlyanduserand/orreceiverissettoshared
only,theuserwillnotbeabletoconnecttothetarget.ThePrivateorSharedmodeisthedefaultmodefor
devices.
Privatemode
InPrivateonlymode,nootherreceiverintheswitchingsystemcanswitchtothattargetdevice.IfPrivatemode
isnotavailable,theuserwillbenotifiedviaanonscreenmessage.Ifthetransmitterisconfiguredforprivate
modeonly,thesharemodeoptionwillbegrayedoutandonlyprivatemodewillbeavailable.
Sharemode
InSharemode,multipleuserscanconnecttotheaudioandvideoofatargetcomputeroverthenetworkand
arbitrateforcontrolofthatcomputer.Sharemodeisthedefaultmode,however,iftheuserhasbeengivenaccess
bytheadministratortheywillbeabletochooseprivatemodeviaaradiobutton.Thesharedonlymodeisthe
defaultmodeforusers.
PeripheralsTab
InordertounderstandthePeripheralsTab,youneedtofirstunderstandwhatanEDID(ExtendedDisplay
IdentificationData)is.EDIDsarebuiltintovideomonitorssothecomputerthatamonitorisconnectedtocan
querythemonitorforitscharacteristicsandcapabilities.Thecomputer’svideohardwarecanthendrivethe
monitoraccordingtotheresolutionandtimingthatthemonitorcanaccept.Thiswillaffect,forinstance,the
resolutionoftheoperatingsystemsdesktopdisplay.
WhenaMatrixtransmitterisconnectedtoatargetcomputer,thetransmittertakestheplaceofarealmonitor,
anditmustactlikearealmonitorandpresentanEDIDtothecomputerwhenqueried.Atransmitterwithfactory
defaultsettingswillpresentagenericEDIDthatrepresentsafictitiousmonitorthatsupportsallofthe
resolutionsthatcanbehandledbytheMatrixsystem.
YoucanoverridethisdefaultEDID,bycapturinganEDIDfromanactualmonitorconnectedtoareceiver,and
pushthatEDIDdowntothetransmitter.Thenthecomputerattachedtothattransmitterwillactjustlikeit
wouldifthatmonitorweredirectlyconnectedtothecomputer.
Thereareseveralreasonswhyyoumightwanttopushamonitor’sEDIDdowntoatransmitter.Ifthemonitor
doesnotsupportthehighestresolutionreportedbythefactorydefaultEDID,thenyoucouldpushthemonitor’s
EDIDtothetransmitterinordertopreventthecomputersoperatingsystemfromdrivingthevideooutputatthe
unsupportedresolution.Thiswillavoidrequiringthereceivertoscalethevideodowntotheresolutionrequired
bythemonitor.ThismayresultinacrispervideoimagefortheuserandwillallowaKVMsessiontobe
establishedmorequickly(sincethereceiverdoesnothavetochangeitsvideoresolutionandthemonitordoes
nothavetoresynchronize).Inasystemwhereallormostofthemonitorsarethesame,youmightwishtopush
thatmonitor’sEDIDtoallthetransmittersinordertoeliminatetheneedforanyvideoscalingwhenusers
establishconnectionstovarioustargets
ThePeripheralstabdisplaystheattributesthatmaybecapturedfromamonitorconnectedtoareceiver.Whena
monitorisconnectedtoareceiver,themonitor'sEDIDinformationcanbepulledintotheswitchandstored.The
